See You at 'the Coop'!
Millard Cooper Park offers pavilions, picnic areas, a nature trail and playground equipment. Friday nights during the summer months is a great time to enjoy the free Concerts in the Park series. ‘The Coop’ is also home to Sykesville Cinema held on second Saturdays during summer months.
The Snack Shack is open during movie and concert nights and features delicious hot dogs, freshly-popped popcorn, ice cream, candy and drinks. The playground is lighted for the kids’ enjoyment. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and take in a movie under the stars or enjoy an evening of music from some of our incredible local talent.
In the Area
Located across the street from Millard Cooper Park is The Sykesville Gatehouse Museum, which serves as a center for community education and historical interpretation of the Town’s heritage, and hosts special events highlighting history, the arts, and culture.
From Millard Cooper Park, a short walk through the pedestrian tunnel running under Route 32 leads to the beautiful grounds at Warfield where hiking continues on a 3/4 mile loop trail.
Downtown Main Street area parks include the Old Main Line Park, Little Sykes Railway Park and South Branch Park. The Old Main Line Park may be small in size, but is large in significance. The train tracks found here are from the original train line, dating from the early 1830’s. This line was known as the “Old Main Line.” Train enthusiasts will enjoy this area.
Historical Significance
Cooper Park, the town’s first, was named for Millard Cooper. “Coop,” as he was called, was the Chief of Police for the town; the Maintenance Superintendent, snow removal expert, and a friend to many Sykesville residents
