The Sykesville Police Department is proud to announce that its popular Junior CSI Academy will be held again this year on September 18, September 25, October 2, and October 9, 2018. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this program being held here in Sykesville. As in the past, the program will take place at the Sykesville Middle School, further strengthening the bond between our community, school, and the Police Department. This program would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of the Freedom District Lion's Club Youth Outreach program. The academy will once again be led by the Sykesville Chief of Police, Michael A. Spaulding, who brings many years of experience in criminal investigations to your academy. Students will be exposed to the various facets of crime scene investigations during the four-week course. Participants will have the opportunity to learn fingerprinting, grid searches, and the importance of learning how to locate, photograph, and collect evidence, as well as how to maintain the integrity of a crime scene. The instructors come from the Maryland State Police, Carroll County Sheriff's Office, Baltimore County Police, and Baltimore City Police Department, and all have experience in the various aspects of crime-scene investigations. Detective Earl Kratsch, retired homicide investigator from the Baltimore Police Department, will once again help lead the program. Classes are scheduled from 4:00-6:30 on Tuesday evenings, culminating with the final exam and graduation on the last day. On the final exam day, the students will face "mock" crime scenes which will be laid out in various locations at the school. The class will be broken into groups, and each group will be assigned to a crime scene to test their knowledge and investigative skills along with the various techniques they learned during the program.Applications will be available after June 1st and can be obtained in person at the Police Department, Sykesville Middle School, or on-line on our website at townofsykesville.org/2161/Police-Department.
